Capital of northern Portugal

Head for the north of Portugal and get lost in Porto, a city nesting in the Douro River that will dazzle you at first sight . Architecture, history and life, all of this is waiting for you in Porto.

Capital of northern Portugal's Suggestions

Immerse yourself in the city's historic centre

Immerse yourself in the city's historic centre

Porto stands on the shores of the Douro River, a city filled with history and amazing landscapes. The streets are narrow and colourful, with traditional houses fighting for space, particularly in Ribeira, one of Porto's oldest and most typical sections, near the water. Take your seat in a terrace and admire your surroundings.

In the opposite bank of the river you will find the Caves do Vinho, an amazing sight: it is here, in these wine warehouses, that you will find the origins of the famous Port Wine (which you must taste!).

For the best shopping, all you need to do is find Rua de Santa Catarina street (Rua de Santa Catarina).

There is no shortage of monuments in this city, and you will be dazzled by Porto's architecture.

Walk into São Bento Station and admire the walls covered in tiles whose drawings tell the history of transportation. Visit the park of Serralves, where architecture, nature and art exist as one.

The Lello & Irmão Bookshop, founded in 1869, is widely regarded as one of the world's most beautiful - you cannot come to Porto without climbing this bookshop's magnificent staircases.

Admire the baroque style of the Torre dos Clérigos (Tower of the Churchmen) and be amazed by the impressive Cathedral of Porto.

Taste Porto

Porto is a city of warm and welcoming people. Here, food is not just nourishment, it is a party, a feast, a string of delicacies served in full plates that will leave you wanting for more!

Start with the typical francesinha, a sausage and meat sandwich with fried egg and a sauce whose recipe is one of the world's best kept secrets. Try the famous local stew, Tripas à Moda do Porto, with a bit of broa, northern Portugal's cornbread. Don't forget to finish off with the mythical Port wine.

You can also pay a visit to the Bolhão Market and enter a world of colours and flavours, with a great variety of fresh products.
