The Convent of São Bento de Avé Maria was built during the early 20th Century. Its main atrium is covered with 20 thousand thematic tiles. Over the years, the convent gave way to a railway station that officially became a historical monument in 1997.
A century-old railway station The station’s tiles define this place as a local landmark and depict a timeline of transportation systems, myths, history and traditions. The station’s main lobby has over 550 square metres of tiles representing historical scenes, traditional country life, the conquest of Ceuta the arrival of king D. João I and queen D. Filipa de Lencastre to the city.
Practical Information After an intervention to restore the tiles in 2010 and 2011 , São Bento was considered one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world! As a celebration of its 100 years, a restoration project was announced that will include a hostel, a TimeOut market and a Starbucks café.
