Municipal Theatre

One of the most remarkable buildings in Rio de Janeiro, the Municipal Building was inaugurated in 1909, in Cinelândia, in the city center. Projected in Renaissance style, it is considered the main show house in Brazil and one of the most important in South America.

For over a century, the Municipal Theatre has received national and internationally renowned artists, in the dance, music and opera specter. It also counts on its own permanent core of artists — Symphonic Orchestra, Choir and Ballet.

A visit to the Theatre will also allow you to discover the works of famous Brazilian artists from its time, namely paintings from Eliseu Visconti, Henrique Bernardelli and Rodolfo Amoedo, as well as sculptures from Rodolfo Bernardelli.

Practical Information

One of the gems you can discover in the Municipal Theatre is the Assyrian Hall. Located beneath the Theatre, this was the place where ancient masked balls took place. Later, it became a cabaret and was also a Theatre Museum for some time, until it was refurbished in the seventies into the bar and restaurant it is today. Its style stands out from the rest of the building, since it’s based on Babylonian and Assyrian architecture.
