Mercadão de Madureira
It all began with an open air agricultural fair in the distant year of 1914. However, in these days, the market is installed in a two-storey building with more than 580 stores, attracts every day about 100 thousand people and has already received the title of Cultural Heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The title of “Mercadão” – big market – suits it well.
As you can imagine, in this place, the diversity of products is enormous; anything you have in mind to take as a souvenir you'll probably find it. However, it's in this venue that you'll feel the Carioca's spirit more intensely. Those who have already been there report that walking in the aisles of Mercadão is a true experience for the senses, always with different colors and different smells in each store. Inside, social differences are left outside.
