Right in the middle of Johannesburg's Sandton suburb, Nelson Mandela Square is a lively commercial area. Every day, crowds are drawn to its wide variety of upmarket shops, stores and restaurants, as well as the nearby Sandton City Shopping Mall. The square is also a spacious and pleasant spot for eating and relaxing, and the air kept fresh by water fountains. A six metres tall statue of former South African president Nelson Mandela (created by local artists Jacob Maponyane and Kobus Hattingh) stands at the centre of it all.
