100 years of construction

In 1501, construction began of what would become the Jerónimos Monastery a century later. Home to burial sites of kings and poets, today the monastery is a remarkable piece in both historical and architectural terms. Lose yourself in the old beach of Restelo and discover the identity and culture of Portugal.

Tour

Tour

Start your visit outside and pay attention to the monasteries’ main doors. When inside, look at the cloister — it is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. In the main chapel you will find the tombs of the monarchs who ordered the construction of this monument — Manuel I and Maria — and their son King John III and Queen Catherine of Austria, his wife.
Spend some time in the chapter room and make sure you don’t miss the tombs of Portuguese poets Fernando Pessoa and Luís de Camões. Near the sub-choir area you will also find the tomb of Vasco da Gama — the navigator who discovered the sea route to India.
Finally, contemplate the choir: the most important prayer area for the monks.
