The History of cocoa

The History of cocoa

In 1822, cocoa crops were first introduced in São Tomé and Príncipe. In the early twentieth century, the rise of the archipelago to the world's largest producer status was a reality — and for many decades supported by slave labor. Today, although no longer in the top, Principe’s cocoa is still the purest chocolate source that you can taste.

Who is Claudio Corallo?

He is considered "the king of chocolate" and worked for 40 years in the production of coffee and cocoa in Africa and Latin America. In 1974 he moved to Zaire, where he acquired his own plantations, but with the country's political turmoil in the 90s, Claudio decided to go to work in São Tomé and Príncipe.

If initially his goal was the production of coffee, he quickly found himself facing a great challenge: to develop cocoa beans that were not bitter. He has created a laboratory for this purpose and the result is an "almost perfect" chocolate, unique in the world that can be tasted in Lisbon or São Tomé and Príncipe.
