Museumplein (Museum Square)
The Museum Quarter, located on the Amsterdam-Zuid area, is home to some of the Netherlands’ major cultural institutions. The centre of this neighbourhood is Museumplein, a great square with a pleasant green park surrounded by several museums and a major music venue.
Your visit can begin with the Rijksmuseum (Imperial Museum), a majestic building with 1.5 km of art galleries and gardens adorned with sculptures. Here we can spend several days exploring thousands of artworks, including paintings by masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt.
The Rijksmuseum is just the beginning of your journey. Close by is the Van Gogh Museum, dedicated to the famous 19th century Dutch painter. Right next door we can enter the Stedelijk Museum and enjoy the best of contemporary art: painting, sculpture, videoart and installations by artists such as Kandinsky, Matisse, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock or Gilbert & George.
Finally, at the park’s southwest corner, we can admire the neoclássica architecture of the Concertgebouw — step inside and watch a classical music performance in one of Europe’s finest music venues.
