The art & antiques district

The art & antiques district

Spiegelkwartier was built in the mid 17th century as a connection channel between Prinsengracht and Boerenwetering. By this time, this district was a residence and work area for artisans, watchmakers, upholsterers, plumbers, that worked in the near wealthiest districts.

With the opening of the Rijksmuseum in 1885, arts and antiques dealers showed articles to visitors of the Museum, while they were walking in the streets linking Spiegelkwartier to the Rijksmuseum.

The museum itself has become a regular client of Spiegelkwartier dealers. In the Museum you can find textiles, ceramics, glass and porcelain pieces, negotiated in this historic district.
