Pedra de Lume Salt Mine

The Pedra de Lume Salt Mine is located in an old volcano crater and are one of the reasons this island is named Sal (“Salt”, in Portuguese). This salt lake is located in a crater where a salt extraction mine operated between 1833 and 1980. Nowadays, it is one of the main local tourist attractions. Visitors can admire the contrast of colours - the coloured layers of rock in the entrance tunnel and the clash between the white salt and the blue ocean - and also explore the old industrial equipments formerly used for salt extraction, now standing as a testimony to older times. You can also go for a therapeutic bath in the extremely salted waters.
