Contagious rhythm

Color, joy, dances and movement are the keywords of the year’s most anticipated event. In Cuba, Carnival is lived with intensity and opens a whole new world: the dances last until dawn, the rhythms invade the streets and no one can avoid dancing.
The costumes are colorful and disguises are popular. The parades transform into authentic urban shows, and are a tradition that evolves from generation to generation.

Havana Carnival

Havana Carnival

Every year, thousands of Cubans welcome the Carnival with open arms. Floats are built and the streets fill up with dancers. But there is room for everyone in this party and children enjoy a special day with the laughter of clowns, the unexpected magic of illusionists, the the art of personalised cars and of course sweets that fill their bellies!

Practical Information

The tradition dates back to 1895, when black slaves held marches and dances to celebrate the days of Corpus Christi and the Epiphany. Over time, the tradition evolved to become a truly national festivity.
The country's largest Carnival is held in Santiago de Cuba at the end of July. In early August, people welcome the Carnival festivities in Havana.
