The difficult start
The Festival has a troubled history, in what refers to the launch of its first edition. In 1939, Louis Lumière was invited to be the festival's president, due to take place for two weeks in September. The choice of the city was unanimous, Cannes. Due to World War II, it ended up not being realized.
In 1945, the French Association of Artistic Action is in charge of the launch. This year marks the 1st edition of the International Cannes Film Festival. In 1948 and 1950 it was not possible to carry it out for financial reasons. At 1951, the event starts to happen in May, something that continues to this day.
In 1968, the festival was interrupted in solidarity with workers and students who were on strike, a time known in history as May 68.
