This large temple was named after the former Moroccan monarch, king Hassan II. The mosque and opened its doors in 1993 and it stands out for its special design (by French architect Michel Pinseau): a mix of Islamic and Moroccan architecture with modern urban, an inner prayer hall with room for 25,000 people, outdoor grounds with space for 85,000 people, and a 210 metre tall minaret, with a laser light permanently pointing at Mecca.
A Modern Mosque
The mosque stands by the sea, near Casablanca’s harbour, which reflects the importance of water in Islamic symbolism. Besides its religious function, the mosque is also open for guided tours.
