Between the 15th and 20th centuries, this majestic palace and temple complex was home to the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. During this period, the Forbidden City lived up to its name: surrounded by a 52 meter wide moat and 10 meter high walls, the Chinese imperial city was truly a world apart. Safe for official audiences, only court members, imperial troops and chosen servants were allowed inside.

After the end of the monarchy, the Forbidden City and all of its buildings were preserved as an historic monument, and its Palace Museum is nowadays one of the most visited museums in the world.
